Detail Oriented vs Task Oriented

Have you ever heard the terms detail oriented or task oriented used to describe someone? Perhaps someone has described you using those terms. Neither trait is the “correct” one, instead they are often opposing traits. This can lead to conflict between both types of people. Why? Because each personality type is diametrically opposite to the other.

So, what is the difference between both types of people? Detail oriented people pay attention to details, no matter how insignificant others may consider them to be. They are good at following directions. These people make good planners and engineers because they are deliberate in their actions. They tend to be logical thinkers and methodical in their reasoning. They don’t just want to get the job done, they want to get the job done right.

Task oriented people focus more on finishing the task as quickly as possible. They are excellent at getting things done. Someone who is task oriented is not going to pay much attention to all the minor details. We all know someone like that. The person who will buy something that requires assembly and will start assembling the product before even glancing at the instructions. Sure, they will complete the job. However, invariably there are pieces missing from the finished product. These people are more focused on finishing the product than considering whether or not it is being built properly.

When working together on a task, both types of people will often drive each other crazy. The detail oriented person wants to read everything and have a plan of action prior to getting started. This annoys the task oriented person because it is taking too long. Conversely, the task oriented person tends to rush ahead and pressures the detailed oriented person to keep up.

Recently, our son asked hubby and me to make him a “Kunai” from paper. Most likely you are like me and have no idea what that is. It is a type of a weapon, used in a show he likes to watch called “Naruto”. He showed us a YouTube video on how to make it, so we decided to have a friendly mom vs dad competition to see who could make it best. These are the finished products. Can you tell which personality made which one?
