Life is short. Time passes quickly. So, if there is something you want to do, don’t wait, just do it. Live your life, now. We often find excuses to postpone things we want to do saying that we will do them “later”. Sadly, sometimes when “later” finally comes, for whatever reason, we are not able to do what we wanted to do.
Recently in a conversation my dad said to me, “People are always putting things off until they get ‘up there’. Well, I’m up there now and I can tell you this, there is nothing special up there. So do what you want to do now”. After having a good laugh, I had to agree with him. Why do we choose to put things off? We tell ourselves we will do it when we finish school, or when we get married, or after we have kids, or after the kids leave home, or after we retire and on and on we go. Before you know it, we are too old or too tired to do the things that we wanted to do and then we become bitter with regret.
Please don’t let that be you. You’re here now. Get out and live your life now. I’m not a proponent of the YOLO (you only live once) mentality, so I’m not suggesting that you behave recklessly. Instead think of it this way, you have one life to live and you don’t know what the future holds, so if you have desires for your life, don’t wait for what you may consider to be the perfect time. That perfect time may never come to fruition, but if you make the first step towards your desires, things have a way of falling into place. Sometimes you have to just step out in faith and the path that you should take will appear in front of you.
A young couple told me that they want to get married but can’t because they don’t have the money for the wedding. Instead, they plan to wait for years until they save enough money. My question to them was simple. Do you want a marriage or a wedding? Because the way I see it, the wedding is just for a day but the marriage is for a lifetime. If you really want to get married you can have a small ceremony now and save for the big party later. You don’t need to postpone it. I used this scenario as an example but the same sentiment applies to anything you want to do.
Spend the time doing things that bring you joy. Treat yourself sometimes. Wear your “good clothes”. Eat on the “good plates”. Don’t postpone your life until later. Live your life to the fullest every day. You are here now. Live your life now.
