This story is a true story that I am sharing with you with the permission of my mother. It epitomizes faithful obedience to God and its impact. I hope it will serve to encourage you.
I was in my last year of high school and it was around the time of my parents’ wedding anniversary. For some inexplicable reason (God told her), my mother decided that she had to give my father a fire extinguisher for his car as her gift. I was mortified when she told me! Of all the unromantic gifts a person could give someone else, this had to be at the top of the list. I tried unsuccessfully to convince her to get a more appropriate gift. She would not be dissuaded.
To make matters worse, I had to accompany her in her search (unwillingly). We went from one store to the next and every one was out of fire extinguishers. I kept insisting that she give up and come back in a week when the last store told her they would have new stock. But she insisted she had to have it that day and she was not going to go home without it. Much to my teenage annoyance, we kept looking. It was Friday and their anniversary was Saturday.
Finally, she decided to try one last store and as luck (God) would have it, they had one left. We bought it and she was very happy. I was glad to finally be able to just go home. The next day was their anniversary and my mom proudly gave my dad the fire extinguisher. I was embarrassed for her and I convinced myself that he was disappointed, although he never said that.
The day after their anniversary my dad went to visit his brother, who lived about an hour away. On the way home, the car caught fire and it was the fire extinguisher that my mother had given my father the day before that saved the car from becoming totally engulfed in flames. Because of my mother’s obedience, may father was able to extinguish the flames and drive the car home safely.
Now some would say that this situation was a coincidence. I don’t believe in coincidences. This was a very clear case of God directing my mother. I have always felt that my mother has a direct line from God’s mouth to her ears. There are so many other stories I could tell where she heard directly from God. What I have always admired is her obedience. Once God tells her to do something, she is unwavering in her desire to do it. It was evident that not only did God tell her to buy the fire extinguisher but He clearly told her it had to be that Friday and no later. Had she disobeyed, this story would have had a vastly different ending.
