Last week, I received a forwarded message from a friend and it was a reminder to “see your blessings”. After receiving the message, I thought about it and I completely agreed. There are blessings all around us but how often do we take the time to really see them? I firmly believe that our lives change when we stop complaining and start counting our blessings instead. However, before we can count our blessings, we must first see them. This means we must actively pay attention. For sure, life won’t always go according to plan, but if we choose to find things to be grateful for, we can find the strength to move beyond the disappointment.
Years ago, I heard Oprah talk about starting a gratitude journal, in which she would write 5 things that she was grateful for every day. She described how this simple act made her more receptive to good things in her life. It’s akin to ‘stopping to smell the roses’. Once you choose to see the blessings in your life, you open up yourself to receiving more. She is right.
When you are counting your blessings you won’t have time to complain about what you lack. Instead, the more you look for things to be grateful for, the more things you will find. If you do this consistently, your mindset will shift from one of lack to one of appreciation – for the big things and the little things we often take for granted.
Blessings are all around you. If you woke up this morning, that was a blessing. If you have all your faculties and are in good health, you are very blessed. I could go on and on but I am sure you get the point. The message today is simple. Take some time out of each day to look around you and find something that you are grateful for.
