In February of 2019, my husband and I took our kids to Disney World and Universal Studios in Florida. It was a wonderful experience. We all had a great time. I would definitely recommend it! However, the day we returned to Canada, we had a scary experience that could have cost us our lives.
To put things into context, when we went, it was in the middle of winter. If you know anything about Canadian winters, they can be harsh. The day before we were due to return home, I received several messages about freezing rain all across the Greater Toronto area. It was so bad that school boards closed schools across the GTA. The freezing rain continued up to the day of our planned departure. So, I was convinced that our flight would have been delayed or possibly cancelled.
To my surprise, when I checked our flight that morning, I saw that it was listed as on-time. Once I saw that our flight was on-time, I had a strange sense of foreboding that I couldn’t quite shake. There had been 36 straight hours of freezing rain. So, I had an eerie feeling that our plane would skid off the runway when we landed in Toronto. Creepy, I know.
We had to check out of our hotel at noon but our flight was not leaving until 7pm. So, to pass the time, we went to Disney Springs. The first thing we decided to do at Disney Springs was to watch a movie. We bought tickets and settled in and I noticed that in the coming attractions, there were 3 or 4 Christian-themed movies, which was very unusual. The movie was good but I had a heaviness resting on me that I couldn’t shake. After the movie ended, my daughter asked me how come there were so many ads for Christian movies this time. I told her because the world needs to hear about Jesus.
Next, we went to have lunch and then we took our son to the Lego store and he was in his element. As we were exploring, the sky darkened and a huge thunderstorm rolled in, which sent us running for cover in a nearby store. It passed quickly and we explored some more and then went to buy some Star Wars merchandise for the Star Wars fans in the family. Soon, it was time to head to the airport.
All day I had had an uncomfortable feeling about our trip home but I never mentioned anything because I didn’t want to scare the kids. As if on cue, on the way to the airport, a massive rainbow appeared in the sky. When I saw it, I remembered the story from the bible of God placing the rainbow in the sky after the great flood, as a promise to mankind that He would never again destroy the Earth by flood. In that moment, I knew that we would experience something unpleasant but we would be ok. The rainbow was so bright that I had to pull out my phone and take a picture of it.
We arrived at the airport and went to buy dinner before our flight. While standing in line, my phone rang. It was my mother, calling to see if we had arrived home and I told her we were waiting to board. She told me that all would be well and I told her I would call her when we got home. I never told her about how i felt but she seemed to know because she told me she had prayed for us and that God was in control. Soon it was time for us to board the plane back to Toronto. We settled into our seats and arrived in Toronto just before midnight. When the plane came to a stop at the gate, I let out a sigh of relief. My worries had been for nothing (so I thought).
My husband hailed a taxi and we piled into it and headed home. It was late and we were exhausted. About 5 minutes into our journey, the taxi headed up a ramp and we started to skid on the icy road. The driver tried to correct the skid and I think he oversteered and before we knew it, we were sliding across the highway backwards and we skidded right off the road and into the ditch. As we were spinning and sliding off the road, I felt like we were in a bubble. I kept saying Jesus, Jesus, Jesus until we came to rest. Within five seconds of the vehicle coming to a stop an eighteen wheeler whizzed by us. I can’t help but imagine what could have happened had it passed 5 seconds earlier.
No one was injured. The vehicle was not damaged. A tow truck had to pull us out of the ditch but the driver was able to take us home without any further issues. Whether you believe in God or not, I can tell you that He was there that night and He protected us. That day could have been the day that my entire family died but instead, I am here to write about it.
