Your thoughts are extremely powerful. So please be mindful of what you choose to focus your mind on. Consider this. Whatever you think about, you will talk about and whatever you talk about, you do (consciously or unconsciously). As a result, your actions over time become your habits and your habits shape your destiny. Take a look around you. Everything you see began as thought – an idea in someone’s mind. The mind is a very powerful tool. Negative thoughts will yield negative results and positive thoughts will yield positive thoughts. Why? Because when you focus your attention on something long enough you will eventually move in that direction.
Think about it this way. Imagine you are driving down the road and you see something unusual along the side of the road. If you take your eyes off the road in front and focus on the thing on the side long enough, you will automatically begin to steer in that direction. Consequently, the effect of losing focus could be that you have a collision. It’s the same thing in life. If you take your mind off the goal in front of you to pay attention to the distractions in life you will end up off course. So, the key point here is that you should focus more on the things you want in life and less on the things you don’t want. By doing this, you will subconsciously start to move in the direction that will get you to the things you want.
In a previous post about effective communication, I talked about the effect of “noise” on the communication process. Noise can distort the message and the same applies to your thoughts. View any negative thoughts that pop up as noise and don’t allow them to occupy space in your mind. Of course, I know it can be very difficult to silence the negative thoughts that can often invade our minds. However, this is where having strong faith and a reliable support system can help you to sift out the negative thoughts so that you can remain focused on your goal.
The scriptures say it best. Philippians 4:8 (KJV) says, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Assess your thoughts through this lens and if they aren’t true, honest, just, pure, lovely or of good report don’t allow them to take root in your mind.
Many of us believe the lies that we aren’t good enough, smart enough, good-looking enough, rich enough, etc, etc and end up sabotaging our hopes and dreams. Unwittingly, we turn these negative thoughts into negative words and actions. Instead, tell yourself you are more than enough, that you are smart, beautiful and blessed. Tell yourself that you deserve the very best and then behave accordingly. Speak life over yourself and into your dreams. Dream big! It takes the same effort to dream big as it does to dream small. So fill your thoughts with big dreams.
